Awareness for High-Consequence Infectious Disease (HCID)
Program Overview:
Awareness for High-Consequence Infectious Disease (HCID) is a 3-hour, 45-minute self-paced micro-credential for healthcare clinical and non-clinical personnel and commercial/public safety professionals. Seven short modules and a selected role-specific capstone emphasize early recognition, prompt isolation and protection, safe operational controls, clear notification, and coordinated recovery.

What the Course Covers:
HCID Overview and Healthcare Impact
Description:
Introduces high-consequence infectious diseases, their operational consequences, the frontline sentinel role, and the four National Special Pathogen System (NSPS) facility tiers.
Subtopics:
- HCID characteristics and pathogen examples: viral hemorrhagic fevers, special coronaviruses, and novel influenza
- Frontline sentinel recognition and potential facility and community impacts
- NSPS Levels 1–4 and corresponding identify–isolate–notify roles
- Infection prevention readiness and staff competency context
Recognition and Initial Assessment
Description:
Builds practical recognition skills using syndromic indicators and recent travel or exposure history, emphasizing protective action before diagnostic confirmation.
Subtopics:
- Fever, respiratory, rash, and gastrointestinal symptom patterns
- Relevant travel and exposure histories and the source document’s 21–30-day screening window
- Initial screening at clinical and non-clinical entry points
- Immediate response to a positive screen: source control, separation, and escalation
Isolation and Prevention Controls
Description:
Explains how transmission-based precautions and engineering controls limit potential spread across healthcare and operational settings.
Subtopics:
- Contact, droplet, and airborne precautions
- Private isolation, controlled movement, and protected routes
- Airborne Infection Isolation Rooms (AIIRs), negative-pressure principles, and anterooms
- Role-specific boundaries and escalation when specialized infrastructure is unavailable
PPE Selection and Use
Description:
Introduces risk-informed protective equipment decisions and the importance of trained observation during donning and doffing.
Subtopics:
- Standard, elevated, and enhanced PPE risk profiles
- Respiratory protection, including N95 and powered air-purifying respirators (PAPRs)
- Donning, buddy checks, and observer-guided doffing
- Common contamination risks and organizational respiratory-protection procedures
Environmental Controls and Decontamination
Description:
Surveys containment of contaminated materials, cleaning, and environmental risk reduction during suspected HCID incidents.
Subtopics:
- Category A infectious-substance waste and UN2814 considerations
- Point-of-generation containment and controlled waste movement
- EPA List Q and pathogen-appropriate disinfection considerations
- Hierarchy of controls and environmental services coordination
Notification, Coordination, and Reporting
Description:
Focuses on timely internal and external notifications and incident coordination while maintaining essential services.
Subtopics:
- Internal infection prevention, clinical leadership, and security notification cascades
- External public health and regional special-pathogen coordination
- SBAR and METHANE structured reporting
- Emergency operations plans, HICS, public information/JIC, and continuity of operations
Scenario Application and Evaluation
Description:
Prepares learners to integrate the seven core competencies and review the evidence needed to document appropriate frontline decisions.
Subtopics:
- Identify, Isolate, Protect, Control, Inform, Coordinate, Recover
- Decision sequencing and consequences across professional settings
- Incident documentation and competency review
- Preparation for the role-specific capstone
Comprehensive Capstone Simulation: Choose Your Pathway
Description:
Learners select one seven-stage branching simulation aligned with their professional responsibilities. Each pathway assesses decisions across Identify, Isolate, Protect, Control, Inform, Coordinate, and Recover, followed by feedback and a final competency review. Learners complete one pathway, not all three.
Subtopics:
- Healthcare Clinical pathway: screening, patient isolation, PPE, and clinical escalation
- Healthcare Non-Clinical pathway: registration, security, environmental services, and facility coordination
- Commercial & Public Safety pathway: frontline detection, separation, operational escalation, and continuity
- Seven-stage decision sequence, consequence feedback, and final credential review
Skills You'll Gain:
- Syndromic pattern recognition and frontline screening
- Immediate source control and protective isolation decisions
- Transmission precautions and engineering-control awareness
- PPE risk assessment and observer-supported safety
